CODE ENFORCEMENT
The Code Enforcement Officer & Galway Building Inspector is responsible for applying and enforcing all New York State Residential & Commercial Building Codes, and Town of Galway Zoning and Building Codes.
ON DECEMBER 31, 2025, THE NEWLY ADOPTED 2025 RESIDENTIAL CODE OF NEW YORK STATE WILL BECOME FORMALLY EFFECTIVE.
Office hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED, DECEMBER 10, 11 & 12, 2025.
However, you are encouraged to schedule an appointment to avoid possible conflicts with onsite inspections and other scheduled meetings.
On days with meetings of the Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Board or Town Board, the office hours are 12pm – 5pm. (Check the EVENTS tab at the top of this page for meeting dates.)
BEFORE undertaking any construction or demolition which is covered by 2025 Residential Code of New York State or Town of Galway Codes, it is your responsibility to obtaining a building permit. Most building projects in the Town of Galway require a building permit. If you are unsure if a permit is needed, please contact the Building Inspector before you start work. (A searchable, online Code of the Town of Galway is available under the GOVERNMENT tab at the top of this page.)
Permits can take at least two (2) weeks during the main construction season. If you need Zoning Board approval for your project, it may take two (2) months or more. Please plan accordingly.
Effective 01/01/2022 all plans should be submitted on 11″x 17″ along with a digital copy.
Please note there is a new application for PV Systems less than 25 KW.
The Building Inspector is required to perform the inspections listed below.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to request the inspections, giving a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to the Building Inspector:
- Foundation Footings BEFORE the pouring of concrete.
- Foundation BEFORE backfill.
- Septic System BEFORE backfill. Be sure there is adequate water to test the level of the distribution box.
- Plumbing, heating, framing and electricalBEFOREclosing in framework. Electrical inspections are conducted by a third-party inspector.
- Prior to any occupancy, a final inspection for a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) is required. BEFORE residing in the dwelling a CO must be obtained, there are no exceptions.
- Prior to any use (additions, accessory structures, decks, swimming pools, fuel burning appliances etc.), a final inspection for a Certificate of Compliance is required.
- Issuance of Building Permits and subsequent inspections, including Septic Systems
- Galway Code compliance activities
- Zoning Administrator – Review of applications filed before the Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board

We advise contacting the Building Department to check availability before coming to the Town Hall.
Inspections:
Applicants are responsible for scheduling all required inspections. Permission to schedule inspections can be given to the contractors. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required when requesting inspections.
Inspections can be requested by email or phone call. You must received confirmation that the Building Inspector is available at your requested time.
Failure to request any required inspection may prevent the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of Compliance.
